Hi Donna, trivia information is a good mental exercise; it entertains and informs the listeners. Knowing weird, fantastic and obscure facts is good for mental health. Use ‘This Day in History’ anytime, it is an opportunity to learn about a variety of subjects and stimulate memory to other facts relating to the subject. Use it at the beginning of an activity while waiting for clients to arrive, use it at the end of an activity while tidying up, use it at tea time to amuse clients and visitors. Turn the TDH into a reminiscing session, e.g. what else happened in the year? What usually happens that is interesting in February? If mentioning someone famous ask which films did they feature? Who they were married to, and so on. “This Day in History’ is also a good pastime for loners who rarely leave they bedrooms. Make a booklet and give it to them.
Hi Janey, have no doubt the lady will forever remember you. I bet no one ever did what you are doing for her. Your lady friend is very lucky to have you; a kind and a compassionate person having an interest in her. What you are doing is perfectly proper, a few friends celebrating the birthday of a lady living her Autumn years. Well done!
Hi Donna, maybe the rules have changed, I am surprised you are having trouble setting up a chicken house. Hens-keeping is therapeutic to elders, helping tackle loneliness, and calming agitated minds. I worked for a facility where we had 6 chickens in an enclosed compound. We just bought the chicken house and then the baby chickens. The most important thing is to have someone in charge until the hens start laying (we did have a Care Plan relating to the chickens establishing who would feed, take to the Vet, etc). Alternatively, you may buy laying hens. In my facility, the chickens’ nests were accessible from a footpath and the residents loved to go there daily to get the eggs. We had no problems with work-health safety. We also had two small dogs, immensely popular. I wish you a successful pet program, it is worth it.
