How to Manage Aggressive Behavior

I work in a Dementia Wing, and we get aggressive behaviour all the time, different things work on different residents obviously .Some residents will go for a walk away from everyone. Or ask them very quietly And slowly what’s upsetting them and if communication is not good, maybe suggest are they hungry ,thirsty, wanting to go to the toilet ,sometimes not always it’s sometimes the simple things .
To agree and support what ever is worrying them ,ask them if there is anything I can do to help, if a resident says Go Away ,do it don’t continue trying to talk, watch them from a distance and come back 10 mins later ,with a smile on your face and say good morning like it’s been the first time they have seen you. Knowing your resident is the key, Not every thing works but it’s trial and error.

Three of a kind

We do this as a group activity and see how many of each category we can get.

I add them all up and at times we have got well over 100, I keep score for each letter and we try to better the score each time.

We have 5 different areas - girls names, boys names, foods, drinks and Countries.

3 Minute fudge

Hi Linda, I'm sorry the fudge didn't set. It probably did not cook long enough. I am not a big fan of the microwave so I do it in the non-stick saucepan. You could try taking you fudge and putting it back in a no-stick saucepan with a teaspoon of butter (medium heat). Stir constantly until the mixture starts coming away from bottom and sides of the saucepan as you do in the recipe for Brigadeiro, the Brazilian bonbon. Anything cooked with condensed milk needs to be well cooked to set properly. I do hope this recommendation solves your problem.

Free Activity Calendar for Seniors

Thanks for the reply. We print it on Tabloid, so it it big paper but it is still in 10 font which makes it hard for the residents to see... is there any way of making it bigger font but still on 1 page?

Free Activity Calendar for Seniors

Hi Leigh-ann!

I'm curious, could you attach an example one of your calendars? And do you have any examples of previous calendars? Did they all fit in your previous template? I'd love to see an example.

Here are some ideas you can try with these templates?

1. Paper Size: One option is to select the largest paper size you're able to print. In a lot of cases, this is A3 / Tabloid. The more space on the page, the less cluttered the calendar report will be!

2. DOC Multi-Page: In a lot of cases, the Word Document version of the calendar is better for complex calendars as it gives you options to easily edit the content later.

3. Multi-Page PDF: If you're using the PDF option, make sure you click the "Multi-Page PDF" option. This will stop the system from trying to squeeze everything on to one page, and instead let it print onto multiple pages!

4. Font Size: Changing font size is an option for the Word Doc version, however, to get it working with PDFs you have to check the Multi-Page PDF described above!

5. Hide Weekends: If you don't schedule activities on weekends, you can actually hide them and just print a 5-day calendar!

6. Change Orientation: Sometimes printing in portrait mode (instead of landscape) can provide a cleaner calendar, especially when combined with Hide Weekends and Large Paper Size!

Let me know how you go :)

Beach Reminiscing

We did the seaside activity yesterday it worked really well. We had mocktails and because it was all pretend even my husband who shudders at anything new was willing to try it. Thank-you so much for this brilliant website. We try to do something every day, the volcano of bicarb and vinegar didn't work for us my husband thought it was going to explode and no ammount of reassurance could help, because he has dementia, once he gets a thought in his head you cannot shift it.

Hi Leigh-Ann, we did the same; font 10 for the calendar but then we printed it in A3 form and placed one copy in each seniors' bedroom. This way it made it easier for them to read and inform their relatives and friends when visiting.

Hi, Love the calenders; however there is not enough space in each day box for all the programs! I got it to fit in size 10 Font but that is pretty small for seniors eyes. Would be great if you could cut off the bottom of the calender so you can expand your daily box room!

16 Snippets of Italian Trivia

I just LOVE the multicultural section of this fabulous website. I work as a Activities Director at a day service facility and we are currently closed due to COVID! I am mailing/delivering personalized packages to our clients. We have clients of many different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Adding pages of color-printed information from their country really brightens their day. The family members/care givers are delighted to see a spark in their loved ones eyes when they see and read about their history. I am becoming so educated myself learning all this. It will help me when we get back to work striking a spark in our clients eye when I reminisce with them about their culture. I seriously can NOT get enough of this fantastic site. xoxo :-)
