Scones are easy, residents love making them. They then eat them with jam and cream for afternoon tea. Cup cake icing is so much fun. I cook the patty cakes at home. I make the icing and pop it in the icing bags the residents enjoy squeezing the icing onto the cakes and create. With sprinkles, silver balls and other decoration. Residents who don't attend are still included. Dementia resident enjoy this activity also. Cup cakes and biscuit decorating.
I have a mini donut maker and I make the mixture up at home and take it in with me. I also take some icing and a selection of sprinkles etc. I make the donuts while the residents watch, and while they are cooling we all help to make the icing. Each resident gets to decorate a few donuts with the icing and sprinkles. If we have any left at the end of the session, :) , we take them around to all the others that don't participate.

I cook often with residents in our facility
They love it and yes it is slow, they take turns with the mixing
The smell of the cooking patty cakes fills the area
so it covers sensory, in many faucets
The residents wash up after the mixing and take pride in this part of the activity as most were home makers
I make pikelets every Tuesday and we reminisce about our experiences of cooking with our families, mother's/grandmother's. The smell in the facility also brings good memories. I have also cooked mini cupcakes in a mini cake/pie maker. The residents iced them for afternoon tea. I used mini patty pans- 1 packet mix made 40 mini cupcakes. I'm going to make mini quiches next week
Great idea will run with it
Very lucky that our cooks provide the cakes. Our residents do cream, icing, sprinkles, banana, we do the activity around the dining table and incorporate it with morning tea all residents wear gloves and we share the cakes with everyone in our dementia unit.
Thank you Denise, this is a lovely idea! This would be a fun intergenerational activity too.
