The Importance of Daily Living Activities for the Elderly

The Importance of Daily Living Activities for the Elderly
4 88

Many elders leave behind a lifestyle they dearly wish to maintain when they enter a care environment.

When planning lifestyle choices to offer, consider the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, history, culture and spiritual beliefs of each person. Ask yourself, who is this person?

Tapping into someone's muscle memory with daily living tasks will assist in meeting their need to feel valued and purposeful.

Remember that not everyone enjoys bingo or wants to play balloon tennis.

I am working in a community setting. My client who suffers from dementia repeats the same question over and over. she is aware that her memory is failing her but more importantly her husband and daughter who are her full time carers are becoming very frustrated with her constant repeation of questions. she is aware of this and she becomes very upset and feels that they are leaving her out of the loop of life. upcoming events are forgotten and she feels that they do not tell her of these events. have you any ideas about remining herself and not feeling so diinfranchized. eg . maybe some sort of events calender? wendy mcalpine

Totally agree person centered is the only way to go,

Have and see activities of daily living empowering people giving them a new focus in life one which enriches daily experience improving self worth and self esteem, its so sad to think and see people who had such enriching lives become dependent on systems that sometimes forget they once had a life mabey very different to the one we are providing.

I believe in O Briens five accomplishments, a great model to base any activity programme on
