Thank you for the many years of wonderful ideas you’ve shared through Golden Carers. Your ideas, along with the opportunities to network with other activity professionals, have been an invaluable resource for me. Wishing your wonderful organisation all the very best.

Hello, I am a Memory Care Activities Assistant. Wondering how people keep things like pens, pencils, remotes from "wandering off" but still have them available safely for those who are in early stage and want to use them. Thanks for your thoughts!
Hi Karen
This is tricky
One thing that comes to mind is to have a game, and the whole group works together to find whatever you are looking for
Another idea is to have spare items when you really need them
You or someone on your staff will have to do a room search periodically because some residents Store items in their room or elsewhere
Hi Karen
You could also have one of the higher functioning residents be your assistant and see Where they think you should keep things that they use
Hi Karen, I work in a D4 Dementia care unit in New Zealand probably similar to your Memory care Unit. I don't leave remotes or colour pens or pencils out for residents to use. Many of our residents would wander off with them. We even have to hide the brush and pan because we have a gentleman who likes to tidy in the dining room but will take the brush and pan away after and often put it in his room. I keep pens and pencils in a small locked room with the rest of the activity resources. The remotes are in a locked cabinet by the TV. that also stores the c.d.s and dvd.s. Other staff can access this cupboard but not the residents.
I work on memory care unit, I velcro our remotes to the wall next to tv. It has never gone astray since. Also in our unit we can T keep out things like the pencils etc, we use them under supervision.
