I am absolutely thrilled to have found this site. My colleagues and I use the resources daily. I would be lost without it! Congratulations on building a site that just keeps on giving!

Hello, I have recently started in aged care as an activties officer and love it.
I was hoping for activties suggestions for reisdents with dementia that hold attention/focus for very short periods. I have been focusing more on sensory experiences like nurture doll therapy and pet therapy, but would like to explore more options. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Hi Isabel, welcome to aged care - it’s great to hear how much you’re enjoying the role.
For residents with very short attention spans, simple and familiar activities often work best. Card and dice games can be easily adapted and encourage quick participation without pressure. These links have some great ideas:

Music activities are also very effective, as music often connects even when focus is limited. Sing-alongs or simple “Name That Tune” style games work well, for example, giving part of a song title and then singing it together once someone completes it.

Consistency and enthusiasm make a big difference. Repeating familiar activities helps residents feel secure, and your energy often keeps them engaged longer than you might expect. Involving higher-functioning residents to help lead or support others can also create wonderful moments of connection.
You’re already doing great work with sensory activities, these ideas can help add some easy, enjoyable group options.
Thank you Susan, this has been incredibly helpful and is much appreciated! I will definitely give these all a go and repeat the ones that go well.
