Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble engaging a resident that has become deaf. He is in good spirits but to explain anything to him is almost impossible. We have a white board which we use to communicate small things, however, to do a new activity is very challenging because he can't understand how to play. He doesn't understand simple instructions for new games and then chooses not to participate. He doesn't know or want to learn sign language.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

You could just write directions out make it simple and show a lot of the steps

You could have this person partner up with another resident and they Point to what they need to do

I had a President who loved to play bingo, but couldn’t hear what was being called and the person she was partnered with pointed to the number. She was so happy that you got to play.

You can use gestural cues

You could make an invitation for them to come to an activity and put directions on the invitation

A family member may be able to help you out too
