On a special occasion we made a memory tree of all in attendance. I printed a picture of a leafless tree and all people attending placed a fingerprint as a leaf and wrote their name in/or next to it. The ink colours we used were Autumn tones. This would make a great Autumn Activity.

Hi Anna

From what I have read, you do not need to use an ink pad.

Just have the residents press on the desired surface

You can use the baby powder and fluffy brush to view the prints

You can try using tape and black paper to lift and view the prints

A magnifying glass will, make the prints easier to see

what do we use to make the actual print? do we use an ink pad? if so, how do we clean their hands afterwards?

Thank you for the information Scot it will be very helpful. Thank you.

Hi Anna, when we ran this activity we just used some smooth surfaces and brushed a very tiny bit of cornstarch over where we had our fingers. It can take quite a bit of trial and error to get a good fingerprint but it's well worth the try. If you have lighter surfaces you can use cocoa powder instead of the cornstarch/baby powder you essentially just need a fine powder I imagine flour may work well also. While we were working on getting a good print I was also starting conversation about how fingerprints are used in court, different stories about how criminals used their knowledge of fingerprints to their advantage to trip up investigators, other methods of collecting fingerprints that we're unable to recreate in this setting, etc.

If you want to create an ink style fingerprint like those you'd see cops taking from suspects at the police station you can use a graphite pencil, press really hard and get a good patch of graphite on a scrap piece of paper rub your finger around in said graphite and then that will act as the ink and help transfer the fingerprint onto the paper. Still a bit messy but a damp paper towel or a wipe will get the graphite off no issue.
