The device used to light the lights is called Hanukkiya and has 9 candles . The ninth candle is used to light the others . Each day you lite an additional candle until the eight day when they are all liten. This commemorates the miracle of when a small flask of olive oil that would have sufficed to light the Menorah for only one day lasted for 8 days of light . The Menorah was an 7 light candelabra that stood in the Jewish temple which was located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The seven candles of the Menorah represented the seven days of creation.
