Recreation & Leisure Co-ordinator
Activities for residents with dementia. I work as a activity coordinator and am finding it increasingly difficult on our memory floor. Most of the residents are in the late stages and spend most of the time asleep. I do a lot of one to ones doing various things. Would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions for me to try. Thank you. Sue
Hi Sue, we have a lot of wanderers within our home. What I have found really useful is to set up various different tables with activities which catch their eyes and attention. As for those sleepers maybe try leaving an activity in front of them so that when they do eventually wake it may draw their attention to whatever it is you put in front of them - music and sing alongs also tend to wake up the residents!!
I just recently joined this site also and let me tell you it is WONDERFUL!!!! I am an activity director at a senior center and not only do our older seniors enjoy it but we also have a group respite program geared towards participants with dementia and Alzheimer's, that respond really well to the trivia/quizzes that the website offers. I am so thankful to have this site as a resource to assist with enhancing their quality of life!
