Just wondering if you have any activities that would help me with my mum. She has Alzheimer's now for 10 years and recently my dad and I have placed he in a nursing home. Mum is 74 years old. She has a habit of twisting and knotting any cords or strings etc on clothes and undoing and doing up buttons on her clothes to the point the buttons pop off.

Hi mandy, Im sorry to hear your mum has Alzheimers, there are many activities she can do, one you could try is fiddle cushions, these are cushions that have buttons and button holes, zips and other items on that are colourful and attractive to the eye, these often distract from undoing items on clothing. Also other activities such as balloon tennis, relaxations, reading etc, there are many good ideas on this site. Many ladies like to keep busy with chores etc, ask the home if your mum can have a cloth so she can do some cleaning, this will offer her self worth by making her feel she is still contributing to everyday things. hope this helps. regards

Have you tried folding tea towels and putting them in a basket or sorting a basket of socks? It works where I am, also making pom poms with wool might work.

Hi Mandy, sorry about your mum. Have you tried 'doll therapy'? Also, it is better to dress your mum in clothes without front buttons or zippers. Even if you give her something else to do, she probably will reach for buttons because of habit. For instance, pullovers are better than cardigans.

Hi Heather thank you for answering my concern. Do you know where I could find a pattern for a fiddle cushion as I love to sew. Thanks again Mandy
