Friendship Afternoon

Hi Debbie, I don't know if Pauline wrote to you about the bread recipe. I would guess the bread is made with a breadmaker and with the bread recipe accompanying it. From my own experience, it is a very successful activity, the scent of freshly made bread goes far and wide and very often bring clients from their rooms to taste.

Hi Elisa, unfortunately, it is an ongoing problem. The nurses are still ‘task-oriented’ despite efforts in the industry to change this system. The best policy is to befriend carers so cooperation is forthcoming without grudges.
In the meantime try to divide the residents into 3 or 4 groups and have volunteers to help you. It is almost impossible to care for large groups the way they deserve without help. All the best.

Hi Samantha, ‘fixing things’ can be one of the most successful activities you can offer a client so inclined. Repairing and mending things was usually the way in the past; nothing was thrown away in the olden days. As a matter of fact, there are new resources about ‘repairs’ being open in many countries like ‘Men’s Shed’, ‘Remade in Edinburgh’, ‘Free Geek Chicago’, and others. Perhaps your client would be happily restoring an old chair(sanding and painting), or replacing a wheel in a child’s bike, or fixing any other broken toy. Some people may enjoy gluing a broken terracotta pot, mending clothes, repairing games consoles, cameras, and many other things. Talk to your client and find out what would he like to repair/restore.

How to write Progress Notes

Hi Debbie, progress notes are very simple documents. You just need to record the resident name, date, your comments and signature. I hope this helps.

Hi Sharon, yes, it is better to divide the group into smaller groups of three to four people. This way you can provide suitable activities that will stimulate and satisfy them: air-drying modeling clay, singing, proverbs, cutting pictures from magazines and old calendars for posters (with safety scissors).

Hi Sunshine, as far as I know, it is illegal to make up a backup copy from movies on DVD, VHS. If they are originals there are no problems. Unfortunately, even if the movies are ‘out of production’ they do not remove copyright restrictions. It is not fair, I know, it would be nice if movies previously available in VHS tape was now available on DVD.

Hi Ursula, you could try taking them on a field trip to visit a stable with some horses. You could also place a request on the local newspaper for a farmer or equestrian club to visit your facility with a horse or two. Either will delight and bring lots of smiles to your clients’ faces. Alternatively, you could pick a prestigious horse race somewhere in the world at a date that suits you to party. Kentucky Derby, Melbourne Cup, Pegasus World Cup, Singapore Gold Cup, Dubai World Cup. There would be so much scope for conversation and going down memory lane. Also, search for racehorse trivia for instance: Kentucky Derby Race is not open to any racehorse; to qualify the horse must accumulate points. The Dubai is the youngest horse race in the world and the richest. Melbourne Cup is going since 1861. It is a great subject for socialization.

Hi, Sunya, On the links below you will find a Spanish song well known in Mexico and the Spanish Americas. A wonderful tune for sing-along. There is also a Mexican Fiesta activity with a few ideas.
