Hi Lorraine, how wonderful it would be: a week off every three months! It won't happen though but being aware of the pitfalls by taking time to learn the signs and symptoms can be a helpful means of prevention. Thank for your feedback.
Hi Sandra, the budget depends on your plans for the year. How many parties, balls, concerts, themed days, and other major events that will need cash. It will also depend on how many beds your facility has. The budget gives a rough cost estimate for field outings, outside resources, decorations, and supplies. When I retired in 2012 we had a budget of $250 monthly in a 52-bed facility. Some months we didn’t spend it all and saved the money for the end of the year when spending increased. There are many ways to make a budget but the main thing is to have an ‘Expenses’ column and an ‘Estimated Cost’ column. Here is some 'food for thought'. Expenses Materials: Supplies: paper, cardboard, ink cartridges, awards and ribbons, posters, postage, books, pens, pencils, crayons, gift wrapping paper, blue-tack, glue, brushes, safety scissors, art supplies, etc Craft: Puzzles, exercises props, soft toys, seeds, themed talk supplies, hats, pantry items, games, balloons, Resources: Books, DVD, CDs, entertainers, clubs, outings (picnics, museums, lunch),etc.
Bingo should be played as often as residents enjoy it as long as there are other alternative activities for those who don’t want to participate. Despite Bingo having a bad reputation (with those who don’t play it, mind you), it was always an immensely popular game in all the facilities I worked for in three different states in Australia. In Queensland RSL War Veterans we played only once a week for $.20 cents a game and some residents liked to have 2 cards so they paid $.40. We played 10 games on Fridays which provided an hour of entertainment. Bingo was by far the most attended activity we had; residents looked forward to it. The money after every game was divided three ways: half for the 1st winner and the other half divided between 2nd and 3rd winners (we continued to play until two more people called Bingo!). By the way, in my experience, it is not illegal to give token prizes for Bingo.
Golden Carers has been a God send to me. The person before me left me winging it. So, I found Golden Carers in an internet search. I use the calendar, lots of the activity ideas, but the most appreciated is the different ideas from other members. Sometimes knowing what works in other facilities is so helpful.... I'm coming to the end of my first year, and can't wait to renew for another year.
