Our sense of smell is closely linked to memory and brain function. Aromatherapy works by stimulating the part of the brain that regulates emotions. This can result in improved sleep and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression in people living with dementia.

Object

  • Sensory stimulation through the use of essential oils

Instructions

  • Assess residents and decide which essential oils you want to use. Lavender is a popular choice for a variety of ailments. For instance, if a resident is having trouble sleeping, 1 or 2 drops of lavender on their pillow may assist in a restful sleep.

  • You may also apply 1 or 2 drops to a handkerchief and ask the resident to inhale the aroma.

  • If your budget allows, invest in a diffuser.
There are various different types available including nebulisers, clay pots and vaporisers.
