Hello all, Our building is opening a Memory Care Home in August. I was wondering what would be everyone's must have or wish list supplies for their Memory Care Homes. Thank you in advance for your replies.
Hi Jennifer, there are so many things you could do to make the Memory Unit a nice place. Offer social and reminiscing activities, gentle exercises, Snoezelen (Multisensory) room, Therapeutic garden, Doll Therapy, and more. The goal is to offer an optimal quality of life to residents. Take a look at the Multisensory room for dementia on this link. https://www.goldencarers.com/snoezelen-rooms-and-sensory-environments-for-dementia-care/3848/
A realistic baby, cat, or dog. Those are calming items. If I have a resident exhibiting anxiety or obstructive behaviors, I bring them my new "grandchild" and ask them to hold the baby while I take a potty break. LIVE IN THEIR MOMENT. Dominoes are a huge favorite as well & I remove all of the command cards from a desk or 2 of UNO and have them play by color or number matching. They can also use it as a sorting activity.
I’m loving your website, it’s been a great help to me over the last six months since I started my new role. Lots of hints and tips, great activities, and it’s great that we can contribute too. It’s fantastic to have such a universal source of information, how we have a common goal and language despite our worldwide locations. Thank you!
