Intergenerational Activities: Making the most of our local community

Well done Joanna, how lucky is your organization to have you around? Thank you very much
for sharing.

Hi Joanna, in my experience the only consent needed is for displaying the photos on social media. In-house photos sharing does not need consent. Regarding the children, you have already the consent of the carers. Why would you need the consent of the parents as well? After all, it is not to share with the media, which is what parents are usually against. I would say it is unlikely you need another consent form if the photos are to be shown in the monthly Newsletter only.

Hi, I would suggest Montessori-based activities like, ‘Pairing’, ‘Colour Sorting’, ‘Matching Shapes’, and Treasure Hunt’. Also try arranging flowers, polishing metal, size discrimination. Links below.

Hi Morgan, It is unlikely that residents want to be left on their own playing a game. finding a couple of volunteers, would help you; perhaps one of your residents' relatives? Euchre has different rules depending on the country you are. In North America, a 24-card deck is most common (using nine, 10, jack, queen, king, and ace in all four suits).
Some players prefer a 32-card deck (adding the seven and eight of each suit). British Euchre uses 25 cards (the 24 listed above, plus a joker). There are other variations as well. Try (via your Newsletter) to request a Euchre player among staff and relatives to come and teach residents.

Hi Frith, have you seen the 'Pub Songs Happy Hour' or "Karaoke Happy Hour'? Both activities can be conducted outdoors.

Hi Sunya, one way to run activities on weekends without a Lifestyle staff is to ask a sympathetic nurse to do it without taking too much of her time. For instance, setting up a Mandala drawing activity on a table for a group of residents. A poster activity could also work; a theme poster on children for instance where she would give residents lots of magazines and safety scissors to search and cut out pictures of babies and children for a poster. She can come back later and tidy up.

Alternatively seek a volunteer willing to come for a couple of hours to lead a class of seated exercises like Movement to Music, or take a group for a walk, or facilitate a High Tea. Of course, you can also rely on a good movie for a couple of enjoyable hours. Best of luck!

Hi Nicala, a facility's newsletter is such fun; I was responsible for one for many years. The newsletter should be a combined effort involving residents and staff. Apart from the usual, Birthdays, Holidays and Events, you can ask a Lifestyle colleague to write a small article: 'The Month in Review' for instance with a couple of photos of residents doing activities. Also, insert some jokes or riddles (or both). Ask residents and staff to contribute, for instance, elect a 'Resident of the Month' and 'Employee of the Month'. Write short biographies of residents, staff and volunteers, share the birth of staff's babies, weddings and engagements.

Hi Amber, although I never led a Bible group I have in the past organized church volunteers to come to the facility for that reason. They were wonderful people who taught, entertained, and made many a sad person happy. I remember one particular group where they started the session with "Finish the Sentence", as an ice-breaker: "I am blessed because..." . It was a very effective start and everybody participated. They also had a nice game where someone whisppered a bible verse in the ear of his nexdoor neighbour and he in turn passed the story to another one and so on with 10 or 12 people. The fun is that by the time the story reached the 12th peros the verse is completely different from the original verse and everybody had a good laugh. Another game very popular was "Who Am I?", two groups of 2 or 3 people would choose a Bible person and write short biography to be read aloud to another group. The group would guess the Bible persongen and then do the same with the other group. I hope this can help you. All the best.

That is a great idea to get client talking about their favourite foods. You would need someone to help you to reserch apetisers and treats from the coutries your clients come from. For instance Greeks would love to eat Honey Puffs and Semolina Pudding. Polish clients would be very proud of serving 'Ogorki' (baby cucumber pickles) or curd cheese with fruit compote. Italians have Canoli, Panetone or Tiramisu. All delicious regional food specific to their countries to get the conversatin going. Good luck!
