When I do reminiscing I try to have visual and tactile objects...eg women's reminiscing I use two old style beauty cases and have things in them like a corset with stockings, petticoat, jewellery, cosmetic mirror, dressing table set...hairbrush etc, lipstick, evening bag, hair net, curlers (the metal ones), scarf etc. This always brings about many memories and discussion - especially when I bring the corset out!!

I have actually done another way with purchasing some perfumes, talcs, soaps, shaving cream etc and have the residents smell them and then we reminisce with what uses they had. So many memories came forth from Johnsons baby powder and sunlight soap...well worth a try. I had both men and women's scents.
Another sensory one worth trying is one cup of rice, 1/2 tsp vinegar and some food colour. Pour rice into container, use a toothpick to swirl around colour and then drizzle over the vinegar. Put lid on container and shake, spread out on plates to dry...to further enhance this I am going to try adding some aromatherapy oils to it...eg white - peppermint, purple - lavender etc

I have taken this one step further and downloaded pictures of the nursery rhymes...on the back I wrote the words to them....there are heaps of them around and some I had never heard of. I did this in the dementia unit and got a great response. Other residents I did this with we spoke about the origins of some of them....which were quite gruesome in some respects.

I have taken this activity one step further and actually put up a dome tent in the room along with camp bed, table, chairs etc and having been a girl guide, brought along some of my guiding things including my camp blanket with many many badges sewn on...this itself was a talking point. Many residents had never been camping, so we spoke about holidays that they have had and then we finished off with a singalong. Future days doing this I will include toasted marshmallows and damper.
