8 Ways to Celebrate Birthdays in Senior Care Homes

At our Day Care Centre we have a book of everyones birthday, volunteers and clients, so we celebrate birthdays every month, could be for only one, or sometimes for a few, - we have special felt birthday hats, which some of the volunteers have donated, with pretend candles on them, you can buy them in cheap shops, so everyone whose birthday it is , if they want to, no pressure put on them, wears the hats for as long as they want and everyone sings happy birthday to them, we have a sing a long, and with their cooked lunch they have a very special dessert, everyone looks forward to birthdays. Short and simple, but everyone enjoys themselves.

Hello Sarah, From an older Volunteer Social Co-ordinator, of over 30 years I would like to wish you all the best in your new home opening in September. I joined Golden Carers at the beginning of the year, and I enjoy it very much, I'm sure you will too. I have enjoyed all my volunteering positions, and as you say this is a great site for new ideas. It will help you a lot, and it is nice to hear that you will be sharing some of your own ideas to this site as well. Good luck Gwyneth

Brain Games for Senior Care: What is Neurobics?

Re Neurobics?
I have an exercise which causes laughter and amazement - none of us knows why it happens, perhaps someone can explain it if it happens to them. Here is the exercise:

Sit down, turn your right ankle round and round to the right and at the same time make a figure 6 in the air. I won't spoil it by telling you what happens when trying it on the clients in our day care centre, elderly, and on famliy and friends. Thank you Gwyneth

Hello Christopher, l on l activity 12th June 2020

Hello, my name is Gwyneth, and I am Welsh, living NSW and I joined Golden Carers beginning of the year, it is a really good helpful website. I am a volunteer, have been for over 30 years, 30 wonderful years. Your letter brought many memories back to me of when I started volunteering at a Vision Impaired Centre, over 23 years now, and still doing it in my late 80's. I am a hands on Volunteer Social Co-ordinator who works out the programme of activities for the whole year. We are a group of 35 vision impaired clients, 3 of them totally blind, one has a guide dog, two of them uses canes, others very low vision, they will try anything, they are out to enjoy themselves , and we try out best to do just that. By volunteering your services you are halfway there, because you want to do it, and that's a must. Just be yourself and be relaxed with him. Through being with him and chatting to him you will ind out his likes and dislikes (on anything) We have a 1 on 1 at times with some of our clients, especially when they are new arrivals. We try to find out do they like listening to the radio, especially the news, some of ours like to keep up to date with what is going on in the world. What music they like classic, jazz, or old time, did they play an instrument, do they like singing, etc. There are talking books you can get from the Library. Ours love to play dominoes, suitable for the blind you can buy in shops. Some play cards, large print. Assistance is given when needed. Taking him out to the coffee shop would be nice, over a cup of coffee it's surprising how relaxed they are and give quite a lot away of themselves. There are lots more you will find out, and I know you will, you have a friendly face. When we take them out, we are careful of how they like to be held, with ours the one with the dog is independent, but will ask for help if he needs it, the other one likes you putting your right arm under his left arm and walking like that, and the other one likes walking with your left arm under his right arm, a simple thing to find out but it is for the best no one gets upset. When you find out all about him, you will be good friends, someone he will feel comfortable with, it is wonderful what you are doing. All the best Gwyneth

Welsh Quiz and Sing-a-long

Hello Margaret and Carole just looking through Golden Carers: Welsh Quiz and Sing - a long -for St. Davids Day, 24th February 2019 Carole - and Margaret 27th February 2019, a long time ago, I don't know whether the both of you are still with Golden Carers, -but I was just going to do a Welsh Quiz myself today 13th June 2020, good job I didnt - there was one done already, a very good one too. I was pleasantly surprised to see a bit of Welsh, being Welsh myself, from the Valleys, and now living in Australia I joined Golden Carers and find it a wonderful website. Although in Australia I still celebrate St Davids Day, with lots of Welsh friends, and we all love our faggots and peas and Welsh Cakes. I have been here for 30 years, and me and my husband run a Welsh Friendship Club, for many years when we first came over - my heart is still in Wales. I worked with the disabled in Wales for many years - but I am volunteering in NSW Australia (30 years) in my late 80's now, and enjoying every minute of it. Thanks for making my day . Every time I see a bit of Welsh, I get a bit homesick, lots of memories flash back, better late than never. Perhaps you are using some of my activitiesI I send in to Golden Carers - I send a lot in - Diolch yn fawr iawn Gwyneth
